Choosing a Binding System : Five Reasons to Choose Plastic Comb Binding

If you are looking for a professional binding system for your office you may be considering a number of options. Perhaps you are looking at comb binding, coil binding, wire binding, Velobind, thermal binding or even Unibind. All of these different binding systems are excellent. However, there are several things about plastic comb binding (sometimes called GBC binding or Ibico binding) that sets it apart from the other binding systems. Here are four reasons why you may want to consider choosing plastic comb binding for your office over some of the other binding machines and systems available on the market.

1. Price: Plastic comb binding has been around longer than any other binding system on the market. For this reason the supplies and equipment for binding documents with plastic combs is cheaper than any other binding system. Plastic comb binding elements start at less than two cents each and comb binding machines are commonly available for just a couple hundred dollars. Compared to coil, wire and thermal binding systems the cost to bind documents with plastic combs is often half or less.

2. Availability: Since plastic comb binding has been around longer than any other binding system the supplies are more readily available than supplies for any other binding system. Large box office supply stores carry plastic comb binding supplies. However, they do not carry supplies for any of the other common binding systems. In a crunch, chances are you will be able to find plastic comb binding supplies locally (even if they are more expensive). If you choose another binding system availability can sometimes be a problem.

3. Variety: Plastic comb binding supplies are available in twelve different colors including black, white, clear, navy blue, maroon, dark green, kelly green, royal blue, red, yellow, brown and gray. This selection of colors is ideal for almost any company looking to bind their reports, presentations and proposals. Plastic combs are also available in a wide variety of sizes ranging from 3/16” up to 2”. Whether your documents are 400 pages thick or just a few sheets, plastic comb binding is a good choice for your binding needs. Plastic comb binding spines are also available in almost any length imagineable from just a few loops for sample books all the way up to 80 loops (almost 4’ in length) for large engineering plans or posters.

4. Ease of Use: As far as binding systems go, plastic comb binding is one of the easiest systems to use. After your pages are punched you simply use your comb opener / comb spreader to open the comb binding spine and place your pages onto the fingers of the comb. With spiral coil binding you have to crimp the ends of the coil, with twin loop wire binding you have to close the wire using a wire closer. Finishing documents with plastic combs is easier than either of these two commonly used binding styles.

5. Functionality: Plastic comb binding offers superior functionality for everyday use. Comb bound documents open flat for easy copying, can be safely mailed and pages can be easily inserted and removed using any comb binding machine. These features make plastic comb binding incredibly versatile and ideal for use by accountants, engineers, schools, marketing departments and churches.

Plastic comb binding is the most popular binding style available on the market. More organizations use comb binding than any other available binding style. If you are looking for a binding style, these are five reasons out of many to at least consider plastic comb binding for your organization.
