What’s The Obession With Black Gadgets?
This may seem like a strange question to ask, why do we love getting black gadgets, however, when you think about it, it does make you wonder. The majority of people know by now that we are a nation of gadget lovers. Whether it’s an iPod, a mobile phone, or a netbook. We all have these little gadgets that go everywhere with us and that we can’t live without.
However, when it comes to choosing which gadgets to buy, why are we always drawn to the same colour, black.
This question came to me after I read an article about Nintendo releasing their black version of the Wii in November. Nintendo have announced that they expect to see a boost in Wii sales with the release of their black edition gaming console. However, why would they think that just because they release their console in a new colour that would get a sales boost. It’s not like their competitors are blowing them out of the water simply because they have black versions of their console. In fact, the Nintendo Wii has actually sold more units, and that’s a white console.
This question of gadget colour can be spread across a number of gadget markets. The mobile phone market is just one example. When the recent iPhone was released, the all black version sold out before the version with a white back. All you have to do is look at the phones on the shelf and you’ll see that the majority will come in black only.
Another market would be the TV market. A few years back, the main colours for TV were black and silver, hell you could even buy blue or pink if you wanted. However, now it’s almost impossible to find a TV that isn’t black.
These days, pretty much all gadgets come in black, from digital photo albums to cool alarm clocks. It’s hard to see the main reason why we always opt for black gadgets. Although black gadgets don’t show as much dirt, they do collect alot of dust. Plus, damage to black gadgets is far more visible compared to damage on a white gadget.
For those of you reading this who don’t like black gadgets, you’re in luck as, for the time being, you can still get some gadgets that don’t come in just black. Although this may change in the future, you can still pick up a aerogarden without it being black. As for the question of black gadgets, I have no idea, maybe someone else has a better idea?
