The Truth about White Carbs and Overeating

Feelings about carbohydrates are running strong these days and the information available is exceedingly confusing. Diets eschewing carbs entirely are wildly popular, but unrealistic and unhealthy. So why do people subscribe to such diets? Because they simply don’t understand what makes a carb bad. While some carbohydrates are necessary for the body to function, providing energy and sustenance – such as vegetables some carbs truly are bad for you; these “bad” carbs are known as white or processed carbs. These are the carbohydrates that are most commonly found in junk foods, fast foods, and those easy and quick snacks that we all love. White carbs are processed carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, corn chips, bagels, and anything made from white flour.

When you eat foods that are dense in white carbs, your body turns it directly into sugar, and this would kill you if the body did not deal with it. This excess sugar causes the body to produce insulin to convert the unneeded sugar into fat! YES, insulin is ‘a fat storage hormone’ and this constant pressure on the pancreas to produce insulin can lead to the development of insulin resistance and ultimately diabetes. Fat, of course, is energy, and in theory, your body is stockpiling for a time when it will need that energy source. But because eating white or processed carbohydrates can also trigger overeating, you return again and again to the food source, and your body never returns to those fat stores to use them up – so you gain weight and become unwell.

This cycle of eating, stockpiling and eating again, combined with the fact that the eating of white carbs actually triggers overeating, contributes to a person becoming a compulsive overeater. You simply eat more than your body needs, and then you crave more because your body doesn’t recognize these processed carbohydrates as “real food.”

Maybe you, like many other people, are looking for something healthy, and figure that if you just have a piece of toast or a bowl of cereal or a bagel, you’re sure to lose weight – compared to eating a dish of sauteed veggies and a chicken filet. But you’d be wrong! Your body can use those veggies and protein as energy, and to improve your body’s function. But it simply doesn’t know what to make of these processed white carbs. They don’t make you see better, they can’t produce strong muscles, new cells or contribute to the repair of your body…so it just gets stored as fat!

One way to break this toxic cycle is to reduce or eliminate white or processed carbs from your diet. Substituting whole grain pasta and bread and eating veggies, fruits, nuts or seeds instead of chips and fries will make you feel fuller with less food, be more satisfying, and help you lose weight. Not too many people get fat from eating too many veggies! This is just one tip for eliminating compulsive overeating that can get you on the road to weight loss and wellness.
