Toilet Training Your Cat in Two Fast Lessons
Practically anybody had a house cat knows what a mission it is, to take care of a kitty litterbox and sanitize it frequently. And many owners of house cats have experienced what an even greater chore it is if the cat doesn’t use the litter box! For sure there are those among us who dream of more important things and do not want to improve litter box cleaning. For these cat owners, we have good news now. Indeed, believe it or not, your cat can be trained, to use an actual toilet. When you do the toilet training with your kitty, you will teach it to to do business on the toilet instead of using the litter box. While this sounds too good to be true, temper your imagination a bit with the realization that you will still have to flush the toilet for your kitty.
1. Moving Your Cat’s Litter Box
In case your cat’s litter box is not yet in the bathroom, you will have to move it there. The litter box should be near the toilet on the floor for some time. Every few days you will put your litter box up several inches making sure that it is sitting very stable. If you have no appropriate furniture fitting this description, you can use books if they are arranged in a balanced fashion. The goal is, to arrive at the point where the rim of the cat box and the toilet bowl are even. After that you want to install a sturdy aluminum pan over the toilet bowl in a way that will support your cat without wobbling as you start the toilet training with your cat. You should put less than an inch of kitty litter across the bottom of the pan.
2. Getting the Cat Accustomed to the new Toilet
Once you have taken away the litter box and have the kitty using only the pan, you are ready to start with the last part of toilet training of your cat. You should begin the training by poking some holes in the bottom of one side of the pan. Yes, you should reduce the cat litter so that it doesn’t go down the toilet. In addition to that, you should think on using flushable kitty litter at this point. The holes should direct your cat to put its front paws on the toilet seat when it needs to potty. After your cat has been doing this for several days, you can make holes on the opposite side of the pan and that the kitty can stand completely on the toilet seat. The critical step of the toilet training is that after your kitty has been doing this with success for a some time, you have to totally take away the pan. If you trained your cat with success, your cat will from now on use the bathroom toilet!
One Final Word on Toilet Training your Cat
These 2 lessons could take as long as two to three months with a narrow minded, older cat. So be patient with your feline companion. Remember a wet environment isn’t something felines are naturally comfortable with. Don’t stop if your cat doesn’t use the toilet every time it has to go. You should keep your pan in case your feline friend is against it or at times down the road reverts to not using the toilet. You can simply put the pan back on the toilet seat and the cat can re-learn to take the toilet again pretty fast. The rewards of toilet training your feline companion are many.
