Ancient Egypt Cat Worship: All Inclusive Holidays In Egypt
When enjoying all inclusive holidays in Egypt, you’ll notice a strong presence of the cat goddess, even though the Cult of Bast (cat worship) was banned in 390AD. You’ll quickly realise why ancient Egyptians worshipped cats when you like at the country’s history. Around six thousand years ago, rodents were breaking into Egyptian farmers’ stores and eating their grain. The African wildcat, an ancestor of today’s house cat, was a first class mouser and was encouraged by the farmers to hunt its prey. By the time 975BC dawned, the cat was being worshipped as a God, known as ‘Bast’ or ‘Bastet’. She was seen as a nurturing goddess of fertility and motherhood – a positive force for prosperity. Her opposite was her twin sister, Sekhmet, who was depicted as a woman with the head of a lioness. She represented the darker side of the Goddess, the destructive power of nature and of mankind. Gods were believed to take the form of cats. By satisfying the cats, people believed they were satisfying the Gods.
Tourists who are enjoying all inclusive holidays in Egypt can visit the ruins of temples of worship, which were constructed during the time of cat worship, which spanned just over a thousand years. The feast day of Bast was enjoyed by 700,000 ancient Egyptians on October 31st every year, who descended upon the temple to dance and eat in celebration of the Goddess. Cats were treated to fine food and carried around in baskets inside the temple. Anyone who harmed a cat was put to death. Funerals for cats were spectacular – the owners would shave their eyebrows off in respect.
A temple was uncovered in Alexandria recently that had been built to worship Bast, which tourists on holidays in Egypt can visit. Inside this temple, which was built two thousand years ago by Queen Berenike II, was over six hundred bronze cat statues.
