Freeride Snowboard

Snowboards: Three Different Types
You can buy 3 different sorts of snowboard – freeride, Alpine and freestyle – although some snowboards manage to fall into more than one of the categories. Each type of snowboard is described in this article.
Freeride Snowboards
This is undoubtedly the most popular kind of snowboard, probably making up half of snowboard sales or more. A excellent example of a freeride snowboard is the Burton Clash Comic LTD.
Freeride snownoards – also called all-mountain snowboards – are good for halfpipe and park work. These snowboards have what is called a ‘directional shape’, which means that the tip is a slightly different shape to the tail and they are meant to be ridden in one particular direction.
Freeride snowboards generally have a narrower tail than tip and riders will stand slightly more towards the back of the board than they would on a freestyle board.
Despite this directional feature, freeride snowboards can still be ridden ‘fakie’.
Freeride snowboards are usually considered to sit between freestyle boards and Alpine boards, providing a good balance between the two.
Freestyle Snowboards
A freestyle snowboard is shorter, wider, lighter and more stable than a freeride board. They are generally considered to be slightly easier to maneuver than freeride snowboards and are often the choice of beginners.
They are good boards for tricks in parks and halfpipes but – due to having less edge grip – are not so good for carving turns or fast cruising.
Freestyle snowboards are usually twin-directional or twin tip, which means the tail and the tip are exactly the same. This makes it easier to ride ‘fakie’ on them.
Alpine Snowboards
Alpine snowboards are also called carving or race snowboards. These sorts of boards are mainly for the advanced snowboarder and they are made for riding and carving downhill at speed rather than for doing tricks.
They are long, thin boards and are meant to be used in one direction only.
Beginners will struggle with Alpine boards and they are usually best left to snowboard racers.
Which Is The Board For You?
It depends on your level of experience and what you intend to use it for. An absolute beginner is probably better with a freestyle board and if tricks are your thing then this sort of board may suit you in the long run too.
Racers will obviously want Alpine boards but these are not ideal for starting out on.
Freeride boards provide the best balance of all, allowing you to do tricks but you can also make good carving turns and engage in some fast cruising. See the Burton Clash Snowboard for a high quality freeride board by a maker with a good reputation.
