Skiing in India
The summers in north India have always been unpleasant, more so for the Europeans who live in cold climate throughout the year. Many hill stations Like Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie, and Nainital were promoted as a result of frequent visits by the Europeans. Himalayas can boast of having some of country’s best skiing slopes. At first this sport was only available to the affluent Indians but with the efforts of adventure sport bodies and local youths it later became available for tourists from other parts of the county and even abroad. Today, skiing is quite popular in the hill stations of North India and new facilities have added up to make it more popular among the masses.
In India there are many favorable destinations like Jammu and Kashmir, the hills of Kumaon, Himachal Pradesh, and the Northeastern states of India, which have become favorite ski hideouts for skiing enthusiasts. Gulmarg is most preferred by beginners in this field.
Preparations for skiing include knowledge of the basic skiing gear, ski goggles, ski helmets, ski socks, and skies. Calculate and decide upon the number of days to be spent keeping the budget and the climate in mind. Knowing your physical capacity is essential to decide the length of the run. Schedule the runs as you are comfortable with them. Being appropriately dressed to accommodate the extreme weather conditions is extremely important. You must take along with you enough warm clothing, dark glasses and heavy boots. You must also get the medical fitness test done before hand.
You should meticulously plan the holiday with ample time for altitude acclimatization. With each stage of altitude increase you should prepare yourself gradually. You should carry the necessary medicines. You should know the ropes of skiing equipment. You should also learn to deal with high-altitude sickness or high-altitude madness. Lastly you should protect yourself from snow blindness, frostbiting, and sun burning during the expedition.
