Raiders Looking To Possibly Dump JaMarcus Russell In Rebuilding Phase
The Oakland Raiders, one of the most popular NFL franchises, are rebuilding. They received some promising picks in the 2010 NFL Draft, but the quarterback spot is up for grabs. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell is believed to have been a bust, despite being a No. 1 draft pick. (So were Ryan Leaf and Brian Bosworth.) Some promising players got a cash advance to don the silver and black, along with some veterans as the team looks to do better than their 5-11 performance last season.
The Raiders may turn the autumn wind cold for Russell
JaMarcus Russell was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2007. During his rookie season, he went 36 complete passes for 66 attempts, two touchdowns, four interceptions and a total of 373 yards. The Raiders went 5 – 11 the next two seasons, and in 2009, Russell began losing form. He was briefly replaced by Bruce Gradkowski, who won games against the Bengals and the Steelers, before succumbing to injury. Fans began calling for Russell to be either benched or released in favor of Gradkowski. According to Yahoo! Sports , the Raiders are supposedly planning to give Russell the boot soon, and he has also been struggling with fitness.
Raiders at the 2010 NFL Draft and other trades
For the first round, the Oakland Raiders drafted Rolando McClain for linebacker. Most of the draft selections they made were for defensive personnel, but they also traded for Jason Campbell, the recently released backup quarterback for the Redskins, in exchange for future draft picks. Campbell had consistently improved with Washington, and has more experience than Russell. That said, with all the payroll loans into defense, there’s a more entertaining prospect on the horizon.
Tim TeBow should consider himself warned
The Denver Broncos just drafted squeaky clean sensation Tim Tebow. He is promising, but he’s no Elway yet. That said, one of the biggest rivalries (aside from the Chiefs and the Steelers back in the ’70s) the Raiders maintain is with the Denver Broncos. A Raider’s defense armed to the teeth and a rookie wunderkind? He’d better eat a good breakfast, as he may eat dinner in the afterlife.
What to do with quarterbacks?
Since appearing in Super Bowl 37 in 2002, Oakland has yet to record another winning season. There is a surplus at quarterback, and one is no longer embraced by fans.
