Did Rain Stop The Cruisers? Dream On!
Drizzle didn’t stop dedicated drivers from taking the trip down Woodward Avenue for Saturday’s Dream Cruise but it did keep cruisers busy wiping off their rides.
Bob Thompson of Lapeer stood toweling off droplets from his 1967 GTO around noon in Pontiac’s Lot 9.
“You spend time detailing a car so I figure a lot of cruisers are not driving because of the rain,” Thompson said. “They want dry weather.”
Most spectators sat under canopies or wore rain jackets.
Chuck Steinhelper of Clarkston bent low to keep the moisture from his stunning blue-and-white 1960 Olds 88. “I bought this car in a 1,000 pieces,” said the retired GM worker. “I’ve owned it 30 years and it has 39,000 miles on it. I think I’m only the second owner. I love this car.”
Steinhelper complained about cruisers trailering their cars to Lot 9 in Pontiac, and then leaving the trailer in the lot. “I think they should have to drive the car in here,” he said.
Milton Hannah of Pontiac stood on Saginaw Street eating a piece of free watermelon being distributed by members of the Oakland Christian Church. “It’s fantastic,” he said.
Lauren Klos, a member of the Oakland Township-based church, said the church decided to hand out the watermelon “to bless the people of the Dream Cruise.” The congregation also donated 1,000 free watermelons to Pontiac food banks, said the Rev. Dominic Russo.
Out on Saginaw, Mike Boka said he drove his 1967 Camaro to the Pontiac cruise from his home in Allen Park. “I’ve come to the cruise for 13 years,” he said. “Who cares what the weather’s like?”
Billie Cowalt of Pontiac was showing cars to his 5-year-old grandson, Brandon Owens. “We’re just out here looking for a little excitement,” he said. “I’m into cars so much.” He pointed toward a mint-condition Buick Riviera. “My father used to have cars like that,” he said. “It makes me nostalgic.”
Terry Percival of Waterford said she came into Pontiac for the Dream Cruise because that’s where her parents, Fran and Jack Taylor of Highland, like parking their 1947 Mercury and 1966 Pontiac Grand Prix. “I like looking at the cars and hearing the loud noises,” Percival said. She looked around Pontiac in the early afternoon and said, “I wish it was busier.”
Percival also was in town with Murray Percival, Jr. and Murray Percival III, all of Waterford. Zak Elwell of South Lyon accompanied the group.
Fran Taylor said, “We have our Pontiac in Pontiac. That car has its original points and the spare is original. It’s a one-owner survivor.” Percival added, “I grew up in this car.” Taylor said she and her husband drive the car all year with one exception. “The only thing that stops us is the snow, because of the (road) salt,” she said.
Tomas Arenas of Waterford brought one of his seven classic cars to Pontiac. “They’re letting too many everyday cars into the cruise,” Arenas said. “I might as well be sitting on Widetrack (during the week) and letting the traffic go by.” He added that he was enjoying the classic cars he did spot in the traffic. “There are many impressive cars,” he said.
He and a friend remarked how they enjoyed just seeing an older Ford truck driven by a “beautiful blonde.” “She’s here every year,” Arenas said.
By 6 p.m., the clouds disappeared and the sun broke through. Woodward Avenue was jammed with cars.
Capt. Robert Miller with the Pontiac police said the cruise had been a “little slower than usual, but that was probably because of the rain.” He added that the people attending had been “well-behaved.”
The accident between a truck and classic car Saturday morning at Huron and Woodward had been cleared in half an hour, he said. “It didn’t affect anything (involving the cruise) at all,” he said.
