Snowmobiles – Snow Alternative For Cars
Snowmobiles (also: sleds, skimobiles, snowmachines) are vehicles meant for travel on snow or ice. The earliest snowmobiles were powered by two-stroke engines; currently, they are powered by four-stroke engines. They are popular particularly in colder regions where there are many new and used snowmobiles for sale. Snowmobiles can be divided into multi-passenger and individual ones.
Multi-passenger snowmobiles
Multi-passenger snowmobiles have been used in northern areas (e.g. Canada, Alaska) as army vehicles (during World War II), school buses and forestry machines. First snowmobiles of that type were introduced in the USA in 1916 by Ray Muscott. They were similar to the currently available snowmobiles for sale. However, those vehicles were not very practical when the snow was wet. Therefore, a Canadian, Joseph-Armand Bombardier came up with the idea of caterpillar track that was suitable for all kinds of snow areas. He started producing enclosed snowmobiles for seven passengers in 1937 (called the B-7′s) and larger snowmobiles that could carry 12 persons in 1942 (these ones were called the B-12′s). Most of the current multi-passenger snowmobiles are equipped with straddle-type seat assembly that comprises of three seats and with movable backrest. These seats place riders close to the centre of gravity of the snowmobile, what makes the ride more comfortable and reduces jostling forces.
Individual snowmobiles
Individual snowmobiles are meant for travel in northern countries where snow lays for as long as nine months. Nevertheless, people from southern regions where winter lasts for about three months also tend to buy them for recreational purposes. In 1955, Allen and Edgar Hetteen and David Johnson of Minnesota built the first practical snowmobile for one person. The earliest vehicles were heavy (weighted over 400 kg) and slow (moved with the speed of about 30 km per hour). In 1959, Bombardier invented smaller and lighter snowmobiles (called „Ski-doo”). From then on, numerous snowmobile manufacturing companies were established. From 1970 to 1973 they managed to produce two million snowmobiles for sale. In the second part of the 1970′s their production decreased due to oil crisis. In 1990′s their sales soared again. Current individual snowmobiles have a similar design to watercrafts. They move on a rubber track that is practical regardless of conditions.
To sum up, there are many types of currently available used snowmobiles for sale. They vary according to the make, model, year of production and price.
